When researching
breast augmentation surgery, it is easy to find information about how to
prepare for surgery, what type of implants your surgeon offers and even all of
the different incision methods that are available to you. What’s less available
is how to take care of yourself after having a breast enhancement. The
following tips will take you from immediately after surgery to the following
months and years after your breast augmentation.
After Surgery
Immediately following your breast augmentation, you
may have some bruising around the surgical sites – this should disappear within
10 to 14 days. Your breasts will have some swelling but will gradually subside
over the next few weeks.
For the first 24 hours you will need to have a friend
or family member stay with you at home. You shouldn’t drive at this time, and
it is advisable to rest as much as possible. We recommend that patients sleep
on their backs with the head of the bed up to a 45- degree angle.
The Do’s and Don’ts
Do:
- Regularly
massage the breasts to improve blood flow and prevent capsular contracture
– this is for saline implants. Anatomical or textured cohesive gel
implants require massage only if instructed by Dr. Carman
- Adhere to your Dr.
Carman instructions regarding pain medication
- Wear the surgeon-provided sports bra for 24 hours a day for 6 weeks after surgery
Don’t:
- Wear underwire bras or
swimsuits with an underwire for 6 weeks after surgery
- Exercise or rigorous
activity for 4 weeks after surgery
- Feel as though the
initial result will be the end result; often times the breasts will settle
in to the size and shape after a few months
Follow-Up Procedures
A few days after your
procedure, you will meet with your surgeon for your first follow-up appointment
to go over the results of your breast enlargement and discuss how to properly
take care of your new breast implants. Dr.
Carman will want to see you for another follow-up appointment about a week or two
after the initial visit, to ensure that the healing process is well underway.
Dr. Carman will also explain how to care for your incisions
and dressings. Dr. Carman will do the initial dressing change, please try to
leave this intact , any concerns please contact the office before trying to
change the dressing yourself the first time. After your follow up appointment,
you may remove your dressings. It is advised that patients don’t take aspirin
or ibuprofen for about 2 weeks following the procedure.

In a Few Years…
Once
you are finished making regular post-op appointments with Dr. Carman, it is
recommended that women replace their implants only if there are any issues such
as rupture, capsular contracture. Because each individual is different, there
is no exact time that exchanging an implant needs to take place, however, it is
best to visit Dr. Carman if you have any concerns regarding your breast augmentation toronto surgery.
Dr.
Carman is a Toronto Plastic Surgeon and a member of the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Canada. Find Dr. Carman on Google+.
